Amy Clapp, 34, and Emma Wilson, 38, are two sisters known as ‘Sisters got Blisters.’ The pair will be participating in the 2015 London Marathon, which is to be held this coming April. The two are aiming to raise 4,000 British pounds in support of charity Help the Hospice. Their local hospice was extremely supportive of the pair and their family when their father lost his battle to cancer sixteen years ago, making the charity extremely important to the pair. Both are hoping to raise awareness as well as money for the cause and will be organizing several fundraising events leading up to the marathon. “The first run was quite comical; we only did about three miles running and walking,” said Wilson. “It was a bit of a shock and we realized how much work we have got to do.”

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters develop as a result of constantly wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear. This happens due to the constant rubbing from the shoe, which can often lead to pain.

What are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

How do Blisters Form?

Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.

Prevention & Treatment

It is important to properly care for the affected area in order to prevent infection and ease the pain. Do not lance the blister and use a band-aid to provide pain relief. Also, be sure to keep your feet dry and wear proper fitting shoes. If you see blood or pus in a blister, seek a doctor.

According to the Running Doc  of the Daily News, there various treatments for bunions that sufferers may want to look into before opting for surgery. Bunions are identified as the big toe’s first joint along the inner portion of the foot that eventually forms a large bump. To prevent the bump from growing any larger, wear loose fitting shoes around the toes or flexible full length orthotics. It may be a good idea to avoid wearing high heels regularly and to use thin foam or silicone toe separators to prevent toes from rubbing together. Anti-inflammatories and corrective devices may also be used. Bunion surgery is the last option if the previously mentioned methods do not work.

What is a Bunion?

A bunion is an enlargement of the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The enlargement is formed of swollen tissue or boney growth. This swelling is caused by a shifting of the bones in the big toe inward, impacting the other toes of the foot. The area around the base of the big toe may become inflamed, red, and/or painful.

Formation

Genetics – people who are susceptible to bunions are often genetically predisposed.

Stress on the feet – wearing improperly fitting shoes or running and walking with improper form may cause stress on the feet. Wearing high heeled shoes puts the weight from the body onto the toes, causing further stress and bone displacement.

Diagnosis

A podiatrist who specializes in foot structure and bio-mechanics will be able to diagnose bunions.

Blood Tests - testing the blood for gout or arthritic conditions can help identify the causes.

Radiological Exam – a podiatrist will request an exam to identify the bunion by taking a look at the bone structure. If the x-ray shows an enlargement of the joint near the base of the toe, this usually indicates a bunion.

Parents that struggle with foot odor in their kids’ feet have several methods available deal with this problem. Generally speaking, stinky feet are often caused by the presence of bacteria. To address the bacteria, antibacterial soap can be used when washing your children’s feet. It also can help to alternate shoes and wear fresh socks daily as this can also help remove the presence of unpleasant smells in those feet.

Sweat is another cause of foot odor. Make sure that shoes are washed and cleaned regularly, and double check shoe sizes to be sure that they are not too fight on your children’s feet. If smells continue to be stubborn, consider using a topical antiperspirant. Visit a doctor for prescription treatment if all other methods prove unsuccessful.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet in childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care from birth to school-age.

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

·         Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet

·         Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.  Be sure the child wears comfortable and protective shoes so that they can grow into their feet properly.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet

  • Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus
  • Be watchful of any pain or injury
  • Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible
  • Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play
